Classroom Sound-field Amplification Systems
Classroom Sound-field Amplification Systems
Amplified sound in the classroom is helping teachers and students communicate better and achieve greater results
The importance of hearing in the classroom
Hearing is the primary channel for learning. In fact over 70% of Student's day involves listening. The more children hear, the better they learn. This is true not only for children with hearing difficulties but for all students. Indeed 20 to 30% of children have temporary hearing loss on any given day (otitis media, allergies, colds).
The Need
The problem with classrooms is simply the physics. Not only are classrooms noisy, but sound levels decrease over distance so that the students towards the back of a classroom find it more difficult to hear. Noisy classrooms contribute to distracted and unproductive students.
Advantages for Teachers
With a classroom audio system, sound is distributed evenly across the room to each student, not just amplified from the front.
The advantage for teachers is that they can address the class in a conversational, nurturing and intelligible tone and reducing vocal strain and fatigue.
A few facts:
- On average, teachers talk for 6.5 hours per day
- 20% of teacher reported voice problems caused 1 day to 1 week of absence per academic year
- 21% of teachers had a pathological voice condition (75% considered preventable)
- 4% of teachers considered a job change because of voice problems
- Teachers are 32 times more at risk for vocal and related health problems than any other voice-dependent occupation
Benefits Summary
Classroom sound-field amplification is the perfect technology for delivering clearly the teacher's voice to all students, thus mitigating poor acoustics and high ambient noise levels that may be present.
For Administrators
- An improvement in academic performance
- A decline in teacher absenteeism
- Substantial savings in substitute teacher pay and uninterrupted student learning
For Teachers
- Reduced vocal strain and fatigue on teachers
- Teachers don't have to repeat instructions
- Teacher can be heard over disturbances
- Spend more time teaching and less time in the management of students
For Students
- Students are more engaged in the learning process
- One-on-one instruction, no matter where you are in the classroom
- Improved sentence recognition ability
- Enhanced language growth
- Increased on-task behaviour: students are more attentive, less disruptive
- Student have improved length of utterance
- Enhanced confidence when speaking
